The Donalda and District Agriculture Society (DDAS) has recently applied for and been approved for a grant under the Rural Connections and Community Broadband Infrastructure Pilot Grant Program. This grant of approximately $86,000 covers 75 per cent of the cost of completing the overall project of providing Wireless Broadband Internet to Donalda, Red Willow and Meeting Creek communities. The DDAS will contribute the remaining 25 per cent of the capital and will own the towers and equipment for 10 years. As a result of this investment the DDAS will earn a 25 per cent royalty on the revenues earned selling broadband internet to the residents in the community. The DDAS has contracted with Nowfast Technologies of Camrose to be the Internet Service Provider. This company will construct and place the equipment in the five locations to provide internet service in the area. The five locations are: two guyed towers on sections 36 42 18 W4 and 28 40 19 W4. Smaller towers are on the Donalda water tower, the Russell Speed silo and the silo on section 27 north of Gadsby. The smaller tower sites are up and running and the larger towers should be completed by this fall. If you currently have line of sight of any of the smaller towers and want a wireless broadband internet connection please call Nowfast Technologies at (780) 679-3286. |

by Maria Browarny Canada day in Donalda started with a healthy pancake breakfast on Thursday July 1. Almost every corner of town came alive with community spirit. Garage sales were set up where treasures and deals could be made. On the top floor of the Community Center, The Sunshine Cloggers from Bashaw showed off their skills in dance. A Farmers Market where baked goods and home made arts and crafts were sold was in the lower floor of the Center. The Donalda seniors offered up coffee, tea and pie. Fresh organic coffee was brought in by a company from Lacombe. There was a concession stand located near the lamp and ice cream just around the corner. The Museum, the Galleries and the Antique Market opened their doors for people wanting to learn more of Donalda's history. There was entertainment for the kids as well. Many games and play houses were set up. A money pit and toy pit were also set up were kids could dig though the sand to find their own treasures. Alberta Prairie Wagon Train provided covered wagon rides around town. At four o'clock it was parade time. People lined the streets for the parade of floats, classic older vehicles, horses and even a farm tractor and combine. Teresa's Catering cooked up steaks and burgers with all the trimmings. Model airplanes danced through the sky and the Donalda Light Horse Riders displayed their talents on horse back. The Tyler Brothers played a combination of country and old time music. People danced until the countdown to light up the world’s biggest lamp and set off the fireworks. |

Village of Donalda Council has received correspondence from the Minister of Municipal Affairs regarding the dissolution study process that the village has been subject to. Council would like to ensure that residents have up-to-date and accurate information on this process and would therefore like to ensure that residents are aware of the following: According to a report from Donalda’s Mayor Terry Nordahl, on March 30, a vote on the dissolution of the Village of Donalda was held and residents voted 75 per cent against dissolving the village. The Honourable Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs, has considered the results of the vote and the public input received via the dissolution process and has come to the decision that dissolution of the Village of Donalda will not be recommended to cabinet and that there will be no further work on the dissolution study process for Donalda. As well, the Minister has ordered a municipal inspection under s. 571 of the Municipal Government Act to address any concerns that may have been raised by the petition or during the public input phase of the dissolution process. An inspector is to be appointed by the Minister in due course. Donalda Village Council welcomes the Minister’s decision and is particularly pleased that the Minister has decided to uphold the unequivocal desire of local residents to maintain their own municipality. |
