The Provincial Court of Alberta has fined Harvest Operations Corporation $70,000 for a pipeline failure that resulted in the release of approximately 119,000 litres of produced (salt) water and approximately 1,000 litres of oil emulsion.  The company pled guilty to releasing a substance that caused a significant adverse environmental impact on a small wetland near Wainwright in March 2007. As part of a creative sentence order, $49,000 of the penalty will be paid to fund a wetland restoration project near Wainwright. The $21,000 balance of the penalty will be paid as a fine.

The third annual progress report on recommendations from a multi-stakeholder advisory committee shows the Alberta government has completed extensive work to ensure continued responsible development of coalbed methane in the province.
 The Coalbed Methane Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Committee’s final report in 2006 included 42 recommendations that were accepted by the Alberta government.

Pipeline enhances carbon capture PDF Print E-mail

Edmonton... The Alberta government signed a Letter of Intent with Enhance Energy and North West Upgrading to construct a 240-km carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline system that will greatly increase the capacity for future carbon capture and storage projects in the province.
“This new pipeline will significantly advance Alberta’s capacity for future carbon capture and storage projects,” said Premier Ed Stelmach.
